Park School lead the campaign with a petition for a 20mph zone on Glebe Way / B1049 when the school opened. 20mph zones are a cost effective measure proven to save lives. In a recent accident in Huntingdon an infant was hit, the child, parents and driver were incredibly grateful for the 20mph zone which saved the child’s life.
When the county council opened applications for 20mph zones Histon and Impington parish council were keen to apply off the back of the Park School’s petition. I worked with the Parish Council who organisation an excellent programme of consultation collecting far more responses than were received for the Waterbeach busway, a £100m project.
There was overwhelming support for the majority of Histon and Impington to become a 20mph zone. It has had a notable impact on speed reduction, improved the perception of safety, given parents and cyclists more confidence to cycle and walk locally and there is significant local support with requests for greater enforcement.
I have begun a conversation about the north end of Cottenham Road and some unintended consequences and intend to pursue that conversation if re-elected.
Orchard Park have also been successful in winning funding for a community wide 20mph zone which should be installed soon.
